Red Sox Face Rays in Crucial Game

Josh Beckett has struggled in each of his previous three appearances, showing a record of 0-1 with a 9.82 earned run average, allowing 10 HRs. However the Red Sox have won two of those three games.

In his last game, Aug. 28 with Toronto at home, Beckett wasn't embroiled in the decision as he allowed 5 runs on hits and five bases on balls, with 9 strikeouts in five innings.

All 5 runs came on home runs. Beckett, who allowed only 18 home runs in 2008, gave up 12 in The month of August.

Beckett most recently faced the Rays May 10 in Boston, surrendering three runs with 6 hits and three bases on balls with 5 strikeouts in 6 IP, however didn't acquire a decision in the Sox' 4-3 victory.

In his latest outing at Tropicana Field, April 30th, he let up 7 runs in 4.2 innings pitched. In five career outings at the Trop, Beckett maintains a record of 1-3 with a 3.58 ERA.

Garza is in a 6-game run without a win, and hasn't won at home in his last five starts. His most recent victory was over a month ago in Toronto, beating Roy Halladay. He has merely one win in his latest 10 outings.

He is best in the AL with a .233 opposing average, but has had the least run support in the league at 3.73 runs per nine IP. The Rays have scored a whole of eighteen runs through his nine losses.

He has let up 3 earned runs or less in 19 of his last 26 starts this year, as well as 17 of his latest 22.

This is his eleventh ever start against the Sox and 5th this year. He has a lifetime win-loss count of 5-1 and a 2.93 ERA, (20 earned runs 61.1 IP.

This year he is 2-0 with a 1.88 ERA versus the Sox. His most recent outing vs. the Red Sox was August 4th in Tampa Bay. He didn't attain a decision, as the Rays were victorious, 4-2 in 13 innings.
