Dustin Nippert Looks Good for Rangers

By Colin Ransby

Dustin Nippert claimed his basis for retaining the No. 5 slot in the Rangers' starting pitching rotation in the Rangers' five-two win versus Toronto in the first portion of Tuesday's doubleheader. Next up, Brandon McCarthy, coming back for his 1st appearance since leaving the active roster in early June for the DL.

Nippert showed far better control than in his most recent appearance last week against the Yankees. In the Bronx, he let up 11 base runners (four hits, 7 bases on balls) and got eleven outs. On Tuesday afternoon, he pitched out of trouble to earn his 5th victory of the season and third as a starting pitcher. Nippert allowed five hits, walked only one. He reduced his ERA as a starter to 4.43 and on the whole to 3.91. It was Nippert's third quality game in his previous five games.

Nippert claimed there seriously wasn't a lot distinction concerning how he threw last week and on Tuesday: "Just able to pitch strikes. In NY, I suppose I threw one curveball for a strike. The bigger dilemma I put myself in, I tried more to get away from it. I was truly going the wrong way. I kept walking guys, trying to make that perfect pitch.

"Earlier, I was able to throw it in front in the count, behind in the count. Keep all of them away from my fastball."

Claimed boss Ron Washington: "I do not suppose he was overthrowing. He was balancing with his change-up and his breaking stuff. Raised his fastball."

Washington and Nippert together revealed Nippert wasn't throwing to protect his spot in the pitching rotation. And Nippert insisted he'll gladly start or come out of the bullpen. Seeing that the Texas Rangers are in wild card pursuit, each teammate's function increases in magnitude.

"I simply would like to lend a hand to this franchise," he insisted. "It's pleasant for us that we have more arms currently. Whoever's playing good baseball you might choose to start.
