The Red Ring Of Death Doesn't Have To Happen To Your Xbox 360

By Marc Sandford

The Xbox 360 is no different from most other complex machines. Proper usage and a little maintenance can help prevent breakdowns and problems later on. With the 360, the problems we're talking about are the red ring of death and other heat related issues.

If you have a new machine and it functions just fine, it is advisable that you practice the following four tips to keep yours working trouble free.

1.) Dust free environment.

Always keep your console clean. It doesn't belong in dusty areas. The reason for this is that dust in the environment can contaminate your machine if it gets into the cooling vents.

This dust traps in heat and prevents the circuitry from cooling. In addition, dust and dirt will also clog the vents, which further impedes cooling.

2.) Enclosed or stuffy environments.

Your console has to have a good deal of air to avoid getting too hot. It contains fans that provide a continuous flow of cooling air. If you keep your machine in an enclosure or in a crowded little corner, there won't be enough air available for effective cooling.

3.) Temperature of operational environment.

The console can build up heat in abundance. So it's a good idea to only use it in a location that is cool. When you do exercise that's strenuous, are you more likely to get heat exhaustion in an area that's hot or cool?

This type of common sense also applies to your usage of your console. Don't use it in rooms that are too warm, or in direct sunlight or next to a heater or furnace. Basically, stay away from any source of heat.

4.) Your Xbox needs a break once in a while!

What makes you hotter? Running a marathon or walking to the mailbox? This type of common sense also applies to the operation of your console.

High definition games will cause a good deal more heat than simple arcade games. When you make your console work hard, take occasional breaks from your gaming. Some time should be allowed for it to cool.

The Xbox 360 can be a fragile thing that needs to be babied. Take good care of it and it will give many hours of trouble free gaming.
